Nature & natural wonders

animals and plants - natural wonders - protection of nature

If we were to begin to talk of natural wonders we would surely have to include the whole of Bohinj under that description. There is so much beauty to be found between the pools of the Sava down in the valley and the mountain peaks above that we can only present a small sample here. Exploring Bohinj is a great challenge for the visitor, but a comprehensive selection of brochures, guidebooks and maps make it easier.
As well as all the well-known and celebrated treasures, there are also surprises waiting at every turn: a lonely corner of the forest, an isolated pool, a carpet of flowers between rocky grey crags. Untamed nature certainly offers us a wealth of wonderful experiences, but it also demands that we behave with responsibility. Man is only a visitor here and should therefore behave himself!
We can get a good view of our mountainous little world from the many easily-accessible mountain look-out points. From Vodnik's Look-out above Koprivnik we can gaze down on Bohinj as though it were an open book. Classic views of the lake can be had from Pec, above St John's.
From the Hotel Ski on Vogel we are eye-to-eye with the giants, and getting there is easy: via cable-car.
Zajamniki, Uskovnica, Vogar, Komna, the gentle peaks above Soriska Planina: these are just some of the most frequently visited Bohinj look-out points.

Among Bohinj's greatest riches are its waters. They enchant us as they tumble and race into great Lake Bohinj or Triglav's emerald eyes. We marvel at the playfulness of the mountain streams and gasp at the power of the waterfalls.

Famous Savica, Mostnice Falls in the Voje valley, Grmecica... these are merely the most famous of Bohinj's waterfalls, but we cannot hope to list them all. Strange Govic, which hints, with its rare eruptions, at the mysteries of the Karstic underworld. The ravines, with their rocky sculptures, bear witness to thousands of years of flowing waters. The overgrown moraines hide traces of ancient glaciers, which in fact gave the Bohinj valley itself its hollowed-out shape.
The world of plants is another precious element of the Bohinj countryside. Luxuriant forests cover the Pokljuka plateau and conceal other natural wonders such as the highland marshes, with their own special flora.
The coloured adornments of the mountain grasses, characteristic of the whole Slovene alpine region, are particularly magnificent in Bohinj. Most famous for their wealth of alpine flowers are Crna Prst and the Valley of the Triglav Lakes.
High above the bustle of the valley, above the sources of the waters of Bohinj and the variegated carpet of the foothills, climb the high peaks.
In the early dawn they clothe themselves in scarlet. In the heat of the afternoon they are often veiled by cloud; before a storm they take on a warning greyness.

On clear evenings they redden again in the last of the sun's rays, when the first lights are already coming on in the valley. They are beautiful when we admire them from the valley - but so much more beautiful if we see them from close up!
